Crafting a Book Proposal, by Interdisciplinary Affiliate

An interdisciplinary affiliate of the CSR, Melody Herr of the UA Office of Scholarly Communications, gave a talk that presented numerous tips from her forthcoming book, entitled Writing and Publishing Your Book: A Guide for Experts in Every Field.


During the session today, Herr reviewed how to:

  • Determine if a book is the right publishing option for the author

  • Identify the publishers which can best serve the author's goals

  • Create a book proposal that highlights the author's expertise and the unique features of the author's research 

  • Craft a cover letter that captures an editor's attention 

Melody Herr is a seasoned publishing professional with more than 16 years of experience in scholarly publishing and who has acquired more than 250 books for several publishers, most recently for the University of Michigan Press where she acquired the Politics and Government titles. She has coached authors working in fields ranging from political science, law, and international relations to regional history, legal history, and general US history. An author herself, she has published nonfiction and historical fiction for young readers as well as scholarly work. Currently, she serves as Head of the Office of Scholarly Communications at the University of Arkansas where she continues to serve researchers and scholars in diverse fields.
